In 2006, TNO did a study into the presence of so-called phthalates in erotic toys for Greenpeace. Phthalates are used to make PVC gently and flexible. They are used for example in vinyl floor-covering and as it appears also in erotic toys. Phthalates are known to leak from a product and end up in the environment. Research among humans and animals has revealed that exposure to these phthalates can cause a disturbance in the hormones, liver and kidney deviations and is even connected to the cause of cancer.

TNO tested eight different erotic toys like dildos and vibrators for these phthalates. In seven of eight toys they found phthalates differing from 24 to 51 percent. Characteristics of these substances are that they are hard to breakdown in the environment and can already be harmful in small quantities.

Playhouse has choosen to use only materials free of these harmful phthalates for every product we release for the Playhouse brand. Where others frequently use PVC materials softened with phthalates for the production of erotic toys, we only use high-quality silicone materials.
